Your deck is your extended living area and you should have the privacy to use it however you want. However, with close neighbors and busy streets, it can be difficult to feel 100% at ease. Luckily, there are a few ways you can add additional privacy to your deck and outdoor space. Build your outdoor oasis with one (or a few) of these tips below!
1. Add a Wall
Depending on your backyard’s layout, adding a wall could be the perfect solution to giving your deck a lot more privacy. The most common fence that is added to a deck to increase privacy is a wood privacy fence. Not only will the wood of the fence blend seamlessly with your deck, but you can actually stain your deck and your fence the same color, effortlessly completing the look. Wood fences are very low maintenance – only requiring a reapplication of the stain every few years to keep the fence looking new.
2. Include Landscaping
You can totally customize your backyard space and improve your privacy with trees, shrubs, and other plant variations. Consider juniper or cyprus trees for height without taking up too much space, and stagger the taller trees with shrubs and bushes to complete your outdoor oasis. Keep in mind that because you will likely be planting saplings, it may take a few years before your privacy canopy is complete. However, if you’re planning on being in your home for years to come, this is a worthwhile investment.
3. Maximize Your Shade
Patio canopies, pergolas, and even umbrellas can help create additional privacy for your deck. Your choice of shade is totally up to you, but here are a few tips.
- Patio canopies and awnings are great if you want a retractable shade option, but can look a little bulky.
- Pergolas will match your deck the best and seamlessly blend with the rest of your yard, but depending on the style you choose, the shade provided may be limited.
- Umbrellas are the most limited of the three options with the shade and privacy offered only found directly underneath the umbrella. However, umbrellas have the flexibility of movement.
No matter what shade option you choose, you will not only get an extra boost of privacy, but your deck will instantly become more enjoyable with the added shade.
4. Build a Trellis
Sometimes added as part of a pergola, other times they stand alone, trellises are great for adding privacy alongside your deck. Typically made with wood, trellises can be customized in a variety of styles to complement your home’s exterior. Plus, you can add climbing vines and other landscaping to further fill in the trellis for additional privacy. To preserve the wood of your trellis (and match it to your deck) consider staining it as you would a fence. The stain will deter premature decaying and boost the curb appeal of your space.
