What is the Deck Building Process Like?

A deck is a functional and attractive addition to any backyard. Not only does it provide a space for outdoor living year-round, but as the summer warmth approaches, it will become the heart of your home for barbequing and summer parties.

Before our team of professionals comes out to build your deck, we think it’s important for you to understand the deck-building process. Below we will dive into the steps you can expect from our team of professionals as they complete the deck of your dreams.

Step 1: Designing

The first step to building a great deck is a thorough design and planning process. At this stage our team will consult with you on the size of the deck, the height you’re looking for and what type of wood will work best for your lifestyle.

We will also discuss any additions you would like to add to your deck like railings, stairs and pergolas. During this process, if the deck design is complex, we discuss with the customer to also partnering with an engineer we often refer.

Before we start work, we will want to make sure everything is approved with your city and homeowners association, but once that is completed, our install team will use batter boards and mason’s string lines to lay out footing locations for the deck. We will also add a ledger board to the house to confirm the deck’s position.

Step 2: Setting & Framing

To ensure your deck is safe to enjoy, we will dig foot-deep holes for footings and reinforce them with rebar before pouring concrete into the footings. These footings will then hold the posts that support the deck off of the ground.

We have a unique installation method that quickens the building process without damaging the integrity of the deck and it assures the deck is leveled before pouring the footings: we use a temporary post to build out the framing of the deck, while the concrete dries. We can then build out the deck and lay it directly on the support posts after the concrete is dry.

For the framing of the deck, we use floor joists that are placed every sixteen inches or 16” on Center. We drill these joists the ledger board that is attached to the house. This keeps the deck secure and ensures it’s longevity.

Step 4: Building

This is the step you’ve been waiting for! We can now install the deck planks on top of the framing to complete the deck. There are several installation methods we will go over with you during your consultation as they vary based on wood and designs chosen.

Some of the installation methods we specialize in are: clips when using composite wood, screws when using smooth cedar, anchoring when we’ve added railings and notching when the deck is side-mounted.

After the deck is built, our service department will visit to ensure the footing is settled, the deck is level and that it is stable and sturdy. Optionally, you can schedule an inspector to inspect the deck for additional feedback.
