Guide to Fence Materials

There are many fence styles and materials to choose from, the design possibilities are endless – and sometimes overwhelming. Here are some things to consider, about fencing materials, when installing a fence.

Types of Fence Panels

There are two main types of fences – component fences and preassembled panel fences.

Component fences are made of individual pieces, such as boards and rails, and can take longer to build. Most wood fences are available as components. Preassembled fences are easier to place but may not follow the contours of your yard. Metal and vinyl fences are usually available as panels.

Fence Materials

Fences come in nearly every material imaginable – from traditional wood and chain link to more modern metal and composite. The best fence material for your yard depends on your neighborhood, home design, landscape and reason for installing a fence.

Wood

Wood is one of the most common fence materials, and for good reason. It looks more natural than vinyl or metal, and can be cheaper to install than other materials.

Some types of wood fences, like cedar and redwood are resistant to decay, insects and warping, but they must be sealed regularly to preserve their color.

Vinyl

Vinyl is another popular choice because of its durability. While it costs more to install than wood, vinyl fencing requires minimal maintenance and lasts longer, making it less expensive in the long run.

When installed property, a vinyl fence can last a decade or more.

Vinyl is also non-toxic and often made from recyclable materials, making it an environmentally friendly option.

Composite

Made from wood fibers and plastic polymers, composite fencing mimics the appearance of wood without the risk of rotting. It tends to cost more than most wood and vinyl fences, but only requires occasional spraying with clean water to keep it looking fresh, making it a more manageable choice for busy families.

Metal

Metal fences come in a range of styles, like classic and contemporary, to match any home. Wrought iron is often seen surrounding colonial or Victorian-style homes, while aluminum and steel blend well with modern architecture.

Wrought iron is typically more expensive because it tends to feature intricate designs. It is also prone to rust, so it requires more upkeep. Aluminum doesn’t rust as easily, but it isn’t always as strong as wrought iron.

Chain Link

Often seen around schools and parks, chain link fences aren’t as popular with homeowners because they don’t offer much privacy. Chain link is affordable and resistant to rust and corrosion, so it can be a good choice for a small area of your yard, such as a garden, where you don’t need privacy but want to keep animals out.
